U.G.L.Y. Author to Speak at Mills College Event

OAKLAND, CA (February 4, 2009) – Brandelyn N. Castine announced today that she will be
featured as a guest author at Soulful, a literary showcase in the Bender Room at Mills College on
Wednesday February 11, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. Sponsored by Roger Porter a UC Berkeley alum and
current Mills College graduate students, Soulful is an artistic extravaganza that showcases various
writers and artists in the community. The event will feature unforgettable pieces reminiscent of the Black
Arts Movement and the Latin Pop Explosion.

“I am very excited and honored to be a part of this event,” said Brandelyn.  “Anytime I can be in the
company of fellow artists is an absolute thrill!” Other featured artists include: Blanca “Blancita” Torres,
Lily-Marie Lamar, Arwyn Moore, and Izabela Filipiak of Mills College. In addition, there will be a very
special reading by the incomparable Cuban-American cultural icon, Christina Garcia.

Brandelyn is scheduled to read a selection from her latest novel, U.G.L.Y and several poems from her
poetry anthology Spoken Silence. Since its release last October, U.G.L.Y has received nothing but rave
reviews throughout the Bay Area.  “This is my first time actually reading from U.G.L.Y. publicly, so I am
anxious to get the response of the crowd,” said Brandelyn.  Copies of U.G.L.Y. will be available for
purchase and signing by Brandelyn at the event. U.G.L.Y is currently available on BarnesandNoble.com.
